Revenues generated by the iPad experienced a significant drop at the end of the year. But Apple is still the world’s number one tablet market and that won’t change anytime soon.

A few days ago, Apple presented its latest quarterly results. And once again, during this three-month period which ended at the end of December, the Cupertino company achieved excellent financial performance.

Indeed, Apple generated record revenue of $123.9 billion, compared to $111 billion during the same period in 2020. “We are thrilled to see the response from customers around the world at a time when staying connected is has never been so important. We’re doing all we can to help build a better world – making progress towards our goal of becoming carbon neutral in our supply chain and products by 2030, and continuing our work in education and racial equity and justice ,” said Tim Cook when presenting the results.

Apple has something to celebrate. Indeed, despite a difficult context, due to the shortage of chips, the firm saw revenues increase in almost all categories.

The only category in which Apple has not shown growth is the iPad . Indeed, revenues generated by Apple’s tablets during the year-end period were down 14% year-on-year. The firm mentions supply constraints that would have been significant.

iPad: despite falling sales, Apple is still the king of tablets

In any case, this poor financial performance of the iPad category does not penalize Apple too much compared to its competitors. Indeed, according to IDC data, the Cupertino company was still the world number one in the last quarter of 2021, with a total of 17.5 million units shipped, and a market share of 38%. Compared to the last quarter of 2020, shipments were down 8.6%. The overall market saw a larger decline in shipments, of 11.9%.

Samsung, which is in second place, is far behind Apple. The Korean giant’s market share was 15.9%. And compared to the same period in 2020, its shipments were down 21.6%.

In its publication, IDC explains that 2021 was a good year for the tablet market. Compared to 2022, shipments increased by 3.2%, reaching 168.8 million units.

Anuroopa Nataraj, senior research analyst at IDC, however, explains that shipments have started to slow as the market has moved past peak demand in many geographies.

“However, shipments for the near future will remain above pre-pandemic levels as e-learning, remote working and media consumption remain priorities for users,” the analyst added.
